Peppermint 10 Released

Team Peppermint are pleased to announce Peppermint 10 (20190514), the latest iteration of our operating system. Based on the 18.04 LTS (long term support) code base, Peppermint 10 still comes in both 64bit and 32bit flavours so older hardware is still supported. We hope you enjoy using it half as much as we did putting it together.

Peppermint 10 main changes:-
  • Kernel 4.18.0-18 which is now on the rolling hwe-18.04 track so will eventually roll onto the 5.xx kernel automatically as the HWE is updated upstream.
  • Updated xorg stack, again via the rolling hwe-18.04 track.
  • Proprietary nvidia graphics drivers now installed automatically if “Install third party drivers/software” is selected as part of the installation routine, this includes automatic configuration of nvidia optimus setups up to the nvidia-390 drivers. If you intend to install the later 396/410/415/418/430 drivers from the ‘Proprietary GPU Drivers’ PPA it would probably be best not to select this option during install and add them manually post-install.
  • Ice (6.0.2) – Ice now has support for isolated profiles for Chromium, Chrome, and Vivaldi SSB’s (Firefox SSB’s are ALWAYS isolated).Firefox SSB’s now also have four bookmarks included by default making the addition of addons and other configuration changes on a per-SSB basis easier. There are also other ‘under the hood’ changes, such as ICE will now rebuild your SSB profiles should you accidentally delete their directories. Also a bug that was stopping Ctrl+Tab hidden tab navigation has been fixed, as has a bug that made it difficult to install addons in Firefox SSB’s because the “Allow” dialog flickered.
  • New GUI Font DPI Settings utility allowing adjustments to system font DPI (this also fixes a bug where the proprietary nvidia drivers sometimes displayed small fonts on the panel/menu in previous version).
Updated applications:-
  • All 18.04 updates to 14th May 2019 have been rolled into the ISO, and we also have updated versions of:-
  • nemo (4.0.6) – which not only feels considerably faster at opening and rendering directory contents, but has finer grained control of desktop configuration options when you right-click the desktop and select ‘Customise’ .. ALL nemo plugins in the repository have been updated, though not all are installed by default).
  • mintinstall (7.9.7)
  • mintstick (1.39)
  • neofetch (6.0.1)
  • xed (2.0.2)
  • xplayer (2.0.2)
  • xviewer (2.0.2)
Other changes and additions:-
  • xreader (replaces evince).
  • light-locker & light-locker-settings (replaces i3lock, but users that prefer i3lock can easily change it back .. just uninstall those 2 packages and the system will automatically fall back to i3lock).
  • network-manager-pptp-gnome (now installed by default).
  • network-manager-openvpn-gnome (now installed by default).
  • New ‘Peppermint-10’ xfce-panel-switch profile (for resetting the panel).
  • New Peppermint 10 Gtk themes (multiple color variations).
  • New default xfwm4 theme to match the new Gtk themes (the new Gtk themes also have their own individual xfwm4 themes, selectable in the Peppermint Control Center).
  • The firefox-theme-lock & thunderbird-theme-lock tweaks now use the new Peppermint-10-Red-Mixed Gtk theme .. these can still be disabled in the settings panel if you want Firefox and Thunderbird (should you install it) to use the system Gtk theme.
  • Two new Peppermint 10 wallpapers by Karl Schneider (default and alternative).
  • Four additional Ray Bilcliff wallpapers.
  • New plymouth startup/shutdown screen.
  • New login/lock screen background image (also by Karl Schneider).

Awesome! Going to download it now. Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks Mark and all who made it possible.

    1. Mark Greaves

Cheers Johan, as one of our main Peppaholics if you’re not happy we’re not doing it right :)

      1. Johan B.

No worries mate. You’ve done it right;)

    2. Angie

Peppermint 10 64-bit runs almost seamlessly on my low-end Celeron Acer laptop with few hiccups. I love it! :)

      1. Mark Greaves

Thanks Angie, great to hear you’re enjoying Peppermint and thanks for the feedback :)

  2. Michael

How do I change the font size for the desktop? I have set the default font so I can read it but that action does not change the desktop font size. Otherwise, a well done distribution. Thank you.

    1. Mark Greaves

      Hi Michael,
You have 2 options in Peppermint 10
      a) Use the Menu > Settings > Font DPI Settings utility
      or
      b) to adjust JUST the desktop font, use Menu > System > dConf Editor
      navigate to the key org.nemo.desktop.font
      and change the font/size there.

In future, can you please ask support type questions on our forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
it’s better laid out for this type of question (specially where any diagnosis has to take place) and you’ll usually get a faster response :)

  3. Nelson

This is exciting news! I’ll be downloading it this weekend. The release note features look really good!

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much Nelson, we hope you like it :)

  4. Luís Rodrigues

Is it possible to update from 9 to 10 or just with a fresh install?

    1. Mark Greaves

Currently it would require a fresh install, but we’re working on instructions to manually upgrade 9 –> 10, these will be posted on the forum as soon as they’re fully tested.

      1. Daniel

Please let us know when the guide is ready.

        1. Mark Greaves

Okay Daniel, I’ll **try** to remember to make a posting here too when I post to the forum .. but it’d probably be easiest for you to just keep an eye for it on this forum board:
          https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/board,18.0.html
Which is where I’ll be posting the instructions.

          1. Mat

Would be so great to be able to upgrade, even if just manually
            Thanks much!
Great distro, been a fan since Peppermint 5

  5. Karl Schneider

I’m building a new Ryzen system. All parts arrive tomorrow. Peppermint 10 will have it’s own dedicated SSD.

    1. Mark Greaves

      Go Karl,
Peppermint on an SSD in a Ryzen system .. planning on warping time ?
Does that mean the Peppermint 11 artwork will be/was finished before I was born ?

  6. wizardfromoz

G’day Mark – downloading Pep 10 momentarily, I have been a fan since 6. I’ll take it for a spin for a couple of weeks, and likely write a Review on it for my HQ at linux.org. I would be surprised if it is not favourable :)

    Wiz

    1. Mark Greaves

Hiya wizardfromoz, thanks very much for the feedback, we’ll look forward to your review over at linux.org and hope you like what you see :)

  7. Bruno P.

Hi Mark, wonderful to see a new release. Always exciting and we all know we can count on a stable
OS. Thanks for your hard work and hope EB (Ooon the Pepp) can one day become your spokesperson lol…

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks Bruno, EB would rather stay independent and unbiased (as if) .. but for now he’s certainly our #1 champion :)

  8. Paul Dufresne

That’s the second times I try to download it today. From 2 computers at different places (home & Library).
The download would failed around 1.45Gb. Trying to finish the download failed.
    The link I used is:
    **LINK REMOVED**

      1. Paul Dufresne

Thanks, just downloaded it fine with that URL.
        I checked the MD5sum too.

  9. Paul Dufresne

    More precisely:
    My file size is: 1,35 Go (1 458 618 368 octets)
and I checked md5sum anyway and it was wrong.

    1. Mark Greaves

Please see my response to your other post above.

  10. Dennis

What is the ‘secret’ to install Peppermint 10 on an older Mac Mini (2009 Intel 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo w/8Gb RAM, 640Gb HD and a NVidia GeForce 9400/256Mb Video RAM) … I currently have it partitioned with /dev/sda1 bios grub 1Mb, /dev/sda2 ext4 mount point / – size= 600Gb, /dev/sda3 efi 20Gb, /dev/sda4 swap 20Gb) … right as I am selecting to install (erase all and install option), I get an error message that says ” The partition /dev/sda2 (The ext4 600Gb partition) assigned to / starts at an offset of 3072 bytes from the minimum alignment for this disk, which may lead to poor performance. Since you are formatting this partition, you should correct this problem now by realigning the partition, as it will be difficult to change later. To do this, got back to the main partitioning menu, delete the partition, and recreate it in the same position with the same settings. THis will cause the partition to start at a point best suited for this disk.” I tried this, but no avail. Still won’t let me past this point onto installing. HELP :)

    1. Dennis

I don’t know what ramifications this may have (newbie) but changing the /dev/sda2 from ext4 to ext2 allowed me to get past the install error and it is now installing Peppermint 10 :) Hmmm … what is the downside of using ext2 ??

      1. Mark Greaves

Non-journaled file systems such as EXT2 will not be fault resistant as EXT4 .. but in average everyday desktop/laptop use you’ll likely see little difference.

If you find you require technical assistance, can I gently steer you towards or support forum:
        https://forum.peppermintos.com
which is much better geared towards technical help .. TIA :)

  11. Superoyster

    Amazing….as usual, best distro….thank u guys….

    1. Mark Greaves

You’re most welcome Superoyster, and thank YOU for the feedback :)

  12. Mirsonni

    Hey guys!

I’ve been in Linux for 13 years now. As with many other people, I started in Linux with Dapper Drake back in 2006. I have changed many distros since then, including Ubuntu proper, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Linux Mint, Manjaro Gnome, Solus, Lubuntu and so on. But there’s only one distribution that I have been using for quite some time and it is – of course – Peppermint OS, Eight, Nine and making plans to install Ten now. It stopped my distro-hopping!

Guys, thanx for your hard work and I wish you all the best!

    M.

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks for the feedback Mirsonni, great to hear Peppermint was like penicillin for your hopatitis :)

  13. Tony Rawlings

Seems to have gone back to the Stone Age when it comes to setting up the printer. Bog standard Epson, still can’t set up. Fedora and Ubuntu immediately find my printer.

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi Tony, can you please raise this on the support forum where we’ll be happy to assist:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
When posting, can you please mention the model of printer, and which version of Ubuntu it worked under.
      TIA :)

  16. carlos sciangula

    Hi Team Peppermint
Thank you so much for yet another wonderful release :-)

    Keep up the excellent work!

    Best Regards
    Henrik

  21. Torsten

    Hello,

I really love Peppermint OS, but I have one big wish: Please, implement the Calamares system installer in the future version(s) of Peppermint. The Calamaras installer is much, much better with UEFI and Secure Boot – this is my experience. Thank you! ;-)
    Greetings from Germany – Torsten

  22. Peter Urberg

Greetings from Minnesota, USA. Peppermint OS is light years ahead of MS Windows and MAC OS, as it is considerate of the users available computer resources, and applies linux to fulfill their needs, either on their local machine, or via server driven websites. My only issue with it is that I haven’t figured out how to make light locker screensaver work. Xscreensaver seems to work on install.

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much Peter praise indeed, if you’re still having problems with light-locker/xscreensaver please raise the issue on our support forum where we’ll do our very best to assist:

6/29/2019: Installed P10 32bit on two Pentium4 Dells (GX270 & Dim8200). Performance is fantastic, far better and safer than WinXP Pro, along side of which I installed P10 using the reliable multboot manager. The Dim8200 without a bios to handle USB boot caused some head scratching, but I surprisingly had Plop on a 3.5” floppy laying next to the PC, which allowed me to complete the second P10 install without a hitch. I have Win10 PCs which are powerhouse production machines, but I now have my old Dells back and I intend to use them daily! Specifically, having them as site specific browser tools will make them a pleasure to use, since SSB isn’t readily available on Win10 yet (no Ice)!
A big thank you for P10 and for a job well done. Best Linux ever!

    1. Mark Greaves

Many thanks for the encouraging words Steve, great to hear you got Peppermint up and running using the Plop Bootmanager :)

  24. claudio paschoal

Não consigo fazer o bluetooth funcionar, já desinstalei, instalei novamente e continua dizendo que há problemas com o blueman, na verdade, reconhece o dispositivo, conecta mas não reproduz o som! Help!

  25. Mike

I’ve been a fan of Peppermint since PM2. Running both a desktop and laptop system on PM9 and I think I’ll load an installation stick and upgrade to “10.” Great OS, it’s been a real seamless easy experience for many years, now. How long is support on this LTS version?

  26. BALAJI

I have a trouble with HD video rendering- 720p & 1080p . I see weird thin Horizontal line separating video be it on firefox or on vlc… I had no issues with Linux Mint Cinnamon Definitely its not H-W issue.. for sure..
My specs are (SVE14A25CNB–upgraded to ssd & ram)
    i5 3210m 3.1Ghz max 2-Core + Hyperthreaded to 4
    8gb Ddr3 1600Mhz Ram
    AMD Radeon 7670M 2gb Vram
    240gb SATA// 750GB HDD..1600×900 TFT Display

    1. Mark Greaves

Most likely screen tearing caused by the xfwm4 compositor which can easily be switched off (automatically switching you to compton as the compositor), can you please raise this issue on our support forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
where we’ll be happy to try assist .. TIA :)

  27. Tom

What would be a benefit of switching from Lubuntu to Peppermint? I’m running an old Win7 PC that I’m trying to get some use out of (as well as Win 7 sunsets at the end of the year). I’ve got Lubuntu on it but curious if Peppermint is any better? Or additional features not available on Lubuntu.

    1. Mark Greaves

That’s a hard question to answer .. there are no benefits if you prefer Lubuntu, plenty if you prefer Peppermint.
Why not try Peppermint on a LiveUSB first and see which you prefer.

  28. Kirk Lazarus

Pmint10 is fantastic and fast on Pentium4/2GB/200GB and Pent4/1GB/180GB Dell PCs. Then I installed Pmint6 on Pent3/640MB/13GB Dell XPS, which ran great and had ecryptfs’d my /home folder and snapshot partition, which Pmint10 could not (no option on install except for turning whole system file into LUK!
So, now I researched issue and decided to go with Pmint8 on the faster Dell PCs, because it did allow the ecryptfs setup of /home folder and my snapshot partition for Timeshift backups.
I hope someday before LTS support expires in 2021 that Pmint11 fixes this shortcoming of a lack of encryption for /home during the OS installation.
Otherwise Pmint10 and 9 were great upgrades regarding look and feel.

  29. Peter Linu

    how do I uninstall VLC?:

    1. Mark Greaves

      VLC isn’t installed in Peppermint 10 (?)

But if you’ve installed it, try running
      sudo apt-get remove vlc

  30. Farmkid

Beautiful and very nice, I changed from Gnome 3

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much Farmkid, glad you’re enjoying it :)

  31. Sean

    Can I load this onto a 64bit 2in1 with a 32bit uefi?

    1. Mark Greaves

No, but we did do an experimental build of Peppermint 9 with a 32bit UEFI:
      https://peppermintos.info/pm9r-testing/Peppermint-9-20190102-32bit-efi-amd64.iso
      MD5: a1b0731db64976b62c23f299efcbb5cb
      SHA256: 9f17afefe2ef5d1bd98d53ad0682f1f1b1edb3a3d12b8b77faeb18db3e844cb8

It’s Peppermint 9, but if it installs okay you should be able to manually upgrade it to Peppermint 10 following this tutorial:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com/index.php/topic,8442.msg86655.html#msg86655

Another option may be to use Linuxium’s isorespin.sh script to rebuild the stock 64bit Peppermint 10 ISO image

  32. Carl

Has anyone tried with success to install Peppermint OS 10 on the new Raspberry Pi 4 or 4B with any of the RAM variants 1/2/4 GB? What are your views/suggestions? Thanks.

    1. Mark Greaves

I’m afraid there’s currently no ARM port of Peppermint :(

  33. ike

when does LTS end in peppermint 10?

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi ike, Peppermint 10 will be supported until April 2023.

  34. Ranitz

Thank you! I am doing the switch from Windows 7 32-bit and Peppermint is perfect, glad to see you are still supporting old systems like mine!!

    1. Mark Greaves

      You’re most welcome Ranitz :)

  35. Tom in GA

Installed on an ACER Athlon 64×2 desktop (Nvidia geoforce -but using free drivers for now; the 340 driver freak out on every distro I’ve tried and since we only use the machine for internet and some light word processing/PDF stuff I’m probably going to let a sleeping dog lie:).
Thanks for creating an easy to use OS that looks pretty good OOTB.
ICE is awesome for setting up relatively secure access to the sites my wife uses for banking.

I have one question and one suggestion:

Question: I attempted to add an action button to the that will pop up with only the option to shutdown or restart. I have done this in standard XFCE distros like MX and Zorin and the process added the button like XFCE but instead of one button it showed 2( a shutdown and restart on the taskbar) – But the buttons do DO anything. What I want is an obvious single red button on the taskbar that my wife can click and -boom; shutdown in 20 seconds unless you hit cancel. I can do this in XFCE but something in the mix of DE’s the Peppermint uses seems to make this not work.

Suggestion: The store items like shirts are a cool way to support the team and sticker’s are a great idea(I’ll buy some to slap on my PC) How about baseball hats with the logo?

Thanks again for all your efforts on this outstanding, stable distro. Peppermint “gets out of the way” and lets us use our computers as he tools they are meat to be. Your team, MX/Antix, and GalliumOs are at the top of my go to distros as I refurb of lease PC’s and send them to schools in the Philippines. GREAT JOB!

  36. Asif R

Hi i would like to thank peppermint team who worked hard and make this beautiful distro very stable. They did put lots of hard work to make it perfect i’ve been using it with and without internet tested with different packages no crash so far using it on my main laptop very solid built its mix of all good things combined very useful tools and softwares since version 10 came out i installed it on 4 machines for my family everyone is happy even windows users its soo easy to use. Peppermint team deserves donation for their hard work

    1. Mark Greaves

Many thanks Asif R, great to hear your family are also enjoying Peppermint :)

  37. Mark B

I love it! been using peppermint now as my go to OS for all my computers. Also great on older tech. my 10 year old HP laptop just had a new lease on life. Been running games on it. Great media player. Ideal for office applications. I have kodi on it too works flawlessly. Simply put it just runs perfectly. Kudos to the team! Salamat from the Philippines.

  38. rayjaen

    1. Joseph Dickson

Yes, I’m running it on an old netbook with an Intel Atom processor and 2GB of RAM.
