Peppermint 10 Respin Released

Team Peppermint are pleased to announce Peppermint 10 Respin (20191210), the latest iteration of our operating system. Based on the 18.04 LTS (long term support) code base, Peppermint 10 Respin still comes in both 64bit and 32bit flavours so older hardware is still supported. We hope you enjoy using it half as much as we did putting it together.

Peppermint 10 Respin main changes:-
  • All 18.04 base updates to 10 December 2019, including the 5.0.0-37 kernel and HWE xorg stack, Firefox 71, etc.
  • Added a ‘Cursor Resizer’ GUI utility to the settings panel.
  • Added a ‘Web Browser Manager’ GUI utility to aid with the installation/removal of some of the more common web browsers.
  • Reverted to an earlier ‘xenial’ version of pulseadio-equalizer.
  • Added a Peppermint 6 (LXDE) style xfpanel-switch profile which swaps out the whiskermenu for an old-school hierarchical menu.
  • Added arc-color gtk themes (new multi-colored Gtk themes built from the well known and respected Arc theme), and switched to Arc-Red-Dark as the system default.
  • Updated the default icon theme with some new icons (including the new Firefox/Thunderbird icons).
  • Fixed a bug where scrolling wasn’t working when using some integrated thinkpad trackpoint devices.
  • Installed p7zip-full out of the box.
  • Fixed a bug in ICE that stopped mouse access to the very top part of the screen that caused the toolbar of some web-apps (such as the ‘Editor by Pixlr’ SSB) to be inaccessible.
  • Fixed unattended-upgrades to work properly in Peppermint. Please be aware unattended-upgrades is not installed by default but should now work as expected should you choose to install it.
  • Advert Blocker now includes more hosts file blocklist options.
  • Replaced the 2 current solitaire SSB’s with a single new one.
  • Added a DLNnetwork SSB.
  • Added a Pinball SSB.
  • Rearranged items in the Peppermint Settings Panel to include the new ‘Cursor Resizer’ and ‘Web Browser Manager’ utilities. We’ve also (by request) removed the ‘Dropbox’ item from the settings panel, dropbox-nemo is still installed by default (and accessible via the main menu) but should the user decide to uninstall it, it will now not stay in the settings panel.

Awesome! Downloaded and already burnt on the usb-stick.

    1. Mark Greaves

Somehow I knew you’d be first Johan ;)

  2. Muhammad Younas Awan

what version of xfce are you using? is 4.14 or still pointing to an older one?

    1. Mark Greaves

Still a mixture of components from 4.12 and 4.13. We’ll be switching to 4.14 in Peppermint 11 (which will be based on 20.04 LTS).

  3. William

Just out of curiosity, when will V.11 come out? I am already running original version of 10, so prob not enough reason for me to update to this one…

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi William – Peppermint 11 should be out shortly after Ubuntu 20.04 is released, so likely sometime in May/June 2020.

If you’re already on Pep10 you’re right, there is no compelling reason to do a fresh install of the Respin .. but we will be posting instructions on how to manually upgrade PM10 –> PM10Respin on the forum in the next couple of days.

  4. Logan Goodwin

Great keep up the good work and thank you

    1. Mark Greaves

Cheers Logan, and you’re most welcome my Peppermint pal :)

  5. Nelson

Thanks for all the hard work that goes into Peppermint. My favorite distro!

    1. Mark Greaves

You’re more than welcome Nelson, thanks right back at you for the support :)

  6. Ahmn

    LXDE menu….YES!

    1. Mark Greaves

      :)

      1. Vibilan

Best operating system that works blazing fast without consuming bulky ram like windows 10 :-) Hope you continue this project and waiting for 20.04LTS Release……

  7. Akash Angle

Pep10 is so cool ! Damn man it’s blistering fast and my primary distro, keep up the good work team.

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks Akash, now the work starts on Pep11 :)

    2. Kgart

How much ram after boot with no apps open does this OS use?

How light is it compared it linux mint?

      1. Joseph Dickson

In my experience at boot roughly 350MB, Peppermint is a little lighter than Linux Mint Cinnamon and roughly about the same as Linux Mint XFCE.

      2. Vibilan

Once you install it on your system’s drive it consumes less than 300 mb in idle(just startup)

  8. Torsten

Peppermint really is great, but I sometimes have issues with Firefox and Vivaldi. I think it’s because of Systemd or Wayland, but I am not sure about this. Otherwise, Peppermint really is a great distribution! Have A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year! ;-) Greetings from Germany…

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi Torsten, thanks for the kind words and seasons greetings to you too, if you’re still having problems with Firefox/Vivaldi can you please raise the issue on our support forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
where we’ll try to get to the bottom of the problem .. thanks in advance.

  9. The Feren OS Dev

Torsten, last I checked Peppermint uses an X.ORG-only session type, so Wayland isn’t/shouldn’t be a part of the problems you may be having at all.

    1. Mark Greaves

Hey Feren, how’s it going my friend ?
You’re absolutely correct, there’s no Wayland session in Peppermint (at least not yet) :)

  10. Todd

The release looks great! Will have to download a copy and try it out over the holidays! Thank you for all of your great work!

    1. Mark Greaves

You’re most welcome Todd, appreciate the feedback :)

  11. Michael Strickland

Out of the 60+ distros I’ve tried (32-bit & 64-bit) Peppermint is by far my favorite! It even runs great on an old Pentium 4 HT 3GHz! I am so thankful the Peppermint team continues to develop this OS for 32-bit machines. There are a lot of them out there with good life still left in them!!

    1. Mark Greaves

Wow! 60+ distros, you have been on a journey Michael, happy to hear you’ve settled on Peppermint :)

  12. Gray

Good news for the New Year. I was just about to install a clean OS, and here is the new version. Thank you and happy holidays! Regards from Russia

    1. Mark Greaves

Perfect timing there Gray, here’s wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year too :)

  13. michael barnes

My PM 10 is running alongside Mint 18.3 xfce , on a Dell dimension 2400, built in july of 2003.
Yeah, I wonder how much longer …32 bit are going away. I notice. the mint 19 & 19.2 will not boot on the old dell so I guess they saying goodbye to it.

    1. Mark Greaves

I’m afraid the bad news is that pretty much ALL Ubuntu based distros will be forced to drop 32bit next year as Ubuntu are dropping all the 32bit packages upstream

  14. Jorge Burlamaque Brasil

    Olá pessoal.
Instalei o papermint, mas me não gostei porque ele não totalmente na lingua portuguesa, como o linux mint por exemplo.

  15. Mal

downloading the new version to be installed on the main computer in the house while I’m on Xmas break from work. Previous version is already on every other computer in the house / on the patio / in the gym out the back yard / spare laptop. It only seems right to complete the cycle.

    1. Mark Greaves

Nicely done Mal, if you keep going at that rate we’ll dominate the world in no time :))

  16. Manjunath

Hello team, I am a first-time user of “peppermint” and it is very good OS. I appreciate the good work by the team. However, the major problem is with the “intel video driver”. I am unable to fix the problem with the video and lagging while scrolling in the browser and watching videos. This is very annoying and irritating. Could you please help me to fix the problem?

I tried some trial and errors but nothing fixed my problem :(

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks for the kind words jose, glad to hear you’re enjoying Peppermint.

Support questions (such as those about clonezilla/wine/LiveUSB’s/etc.) should be posted to our support forum:

  18. Tim Harless

Is there a way to upgrade from 10 to 10 respin or do you have to do a fresh install?

      1. Tim Harless

Thanks Mark! Peppermint is very special. I enjoy listening to Zeb and the crew on Destination Linux. Zeb does a great job of keeping everyone updated on Peppermint. I am posting this while using Peppermint 10! Keep up the great work!

  19. WC Jones

I have tried to update or upgrade and even tried to install Peppermint 10 5 times or so … There is something dufferent in the video that causes it to lock where system has to be hard restarted … I even tried upgrading to 10 without changing the kernel … made no difference … something in 10 is making a change to the environment that is almost immediately fatal…

So on 9 I must stay until I find out what changes between 9 and 10 video wise. …

any ideas where to start looking?

    thx/bill

    1. Joseph

Hi WC I’d suggest searching the community forum for similar issues that may provide insight. If that doesn’t help definitely create a new topic in the support forums under Installation.

  20. Sandddy

Hi does peppermint 10 will get support up to 2023. Can I use peppermint 10 upto 2023 without upgrading to peppermint 11,12…..in future?

    1. Joseph

Peppermint 10 will be supported until the release of Peppermint 11 at which point you’ll want to migrate to the latest version.

However, Ubuntu core components will be supported until April 2023. So that gives you some flexibility.

  21. Nick Reith

Why the aversion to mentioning “Ubuntu”? I see mention of “the 18.04 LTS base” and other things, but had to dig around in comments (or guess) to know this meant Ubuntu.

    1. Joseph

      Hi Nick,
Our release notes go into greater detail and mentions Ubuntu.

Hoverer, Peppermint isn’t an official respin nor is it affiliated with the Ubuntu project.

  22. John

Installed Peppermint 10 32-bit on my Acer netbook. I have been through nearly an OS per day trying to find one that I like…one that is fast and stable, while complete with good looks and easy expandability. Ubuntu Mate comes close, but Peppermint 10 is perfect for what I want out of an operating system.

    Keep up the great work

  23. jorge osorio

Hello, i¨m trying to use it from usb, but it ask me for a user name and password

  24. MelZee

Peppermint 32 bit cannot be installed on a laptop (10 years old) on the following hardware

Delock 62495 Konverter IDE 44 Pin > mSATA mit 2.5″ Rahmen (7 mm) with
    Transcend 256GB SATA III 6GB/S MSA230S mSATA SSD 230S SSD TS256GMSA230S

    The following error was:

ata1.00: failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40)
    ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)
    ata1: SRST failed (errno=-16)
    some more…
    ata1: reset failed, giving up

on that hardware server 2008 or Windows xp could be installed without any problem, also PCLinuxOS with some problems

How can that problem be solved, the internet could not help !

  25. George Masters

2020-02-18 Peppermint 10 download pages appear to be broken. They are going to a page not found. Same issue for both 32 and 64 bit downloads either direct or via torrent.

    1. Joseph Dickson

      Thanks George,
Looks like our redirect to the downloads broke. I’m looking into it.

  26. RUben

Using peppermin os on my hp probook 430 since 2016,very pleased by it.Thanks for everything!

  27. John Michael

Peppermin is based on Lubuntu, right? The next Lubuntu 20.04 LTS will be with Lxqt. Lxde is not being developed anymore. What will you do? Add only xfce on the new Peppermin 11? Or add xfce+lxde. Or add xfce+lxqt? And when do you plan to launch Peppermin 11? May, 2020. December, 2020… Thank you! :)

    1. spence

PeppermintOS retains only two components of LXDE. Peppermint 10 Respin was assembled via PCNetSpec’s ethos of collecting “the best of linux” packages and combining them into a finely tuned distribution. As Lubuntu moves more toward LXQt, #teampeppermint is reviewing our options, as we sift thru the prolific development code bequeathed us by our beloved friend, guru, buddy Mark Greaves.

  28. Nelson A.

Is this the last 32 bit support version??

  29. Carlos Pereira

When Peppermint 11 is released will it receive support for the 32-bit architecture ?

  30. Bill

Is Peppermint a rolling release? I did a search in this article and did not find the info. Thanks in advance.

    1. Joseph Dickson

Hi Bill, Peppermint is based on Ubuntu LTS. It is not a rolling release distribution.

  31. Sanju Simon

Hi, I don’t know why I was banned from the peppermint forum. It says I am a spammer. I was waiting for help regarding an issue. I had posted screenshots to the forum from Peppermint using the built in “imgur” tool. I guess thats the reason for the ban. My username was hellbraker.

  32. Danny

Hey excuse I’m having a problem where I click on direct download 64 bit of peppermint os and it gives me a zip file, not an iso file…because it is a zip file i don’t know how i can burn it on to my usb and download on another device pls send me help, all other youtube tutorials have gotten an iso file but i got zip pls help me

    1. Joseph Dickson

Hi Danny, please visit https://peppermintos.com/guide/downloading/ and if you require additional support visit our community forum at forum.peppermintos.com/ any support you’re receiving from other parties such as YouTube or alternative download sources may not be a reliable source.

Peppermint OS is not not providing our .iso as a .zip file so whatever source you used please discard it.

  33. SuKi

i am going to install peppermint 10 respin…on my device… i heard there is gonna be a release of peppermint os based on ubuntu 20.04… when its gonna release ???

    1. Joseph Dickson

      Hi SuKi,
It’s coming but we don’t have a release date yet.

  34. Calaza

    1. Joseph Dickson

I assure you, we’re working on it.

  36. wildan

i like it, very stable in my laptop, thanks.

  37. TORSUMY

Fast ubuntu-based distro. When on 20.04?

    1. Joseph Dickson

Hi Torsumhy, We’re currently working on the next release but don’t yet have a release date.

  38. Max

I like so much Peppermint. I fell in love since I discovered PP8. Now it’s my main distro in the pc(s) of my daily use. Do I still have to have faith in a future development?
In less than 40 days the DistroWatch will move this project to “dormant”. AND over all the sw manufacturers from April 22 will no longer consider compatibility with 18.04. For these reasons, at least for computers that often have to connect to the internet, I am sadly starting to consider to be necessary to look around
