peppermint_christmas_logo

Team Peppermint are pleased to announce the latest iteration of our operating system ISO images Peppermint 9 Respin-2 (20190102). This is a bug fix release of the original Peppermint 9 Respin ISO images  that fixes 3 issues discovered in the installation routine. There is no need for anyone who has already successfully installed the first Peppermint 9 Respin (20181222) to reinstall this version, this purely fixes bugs in the installation routine.

Peppermint 9 Respin-2 is still available in 32bit and 64bit versions with the 64bit version having full UEFI and Secureboot support.

Peppermint 9 Respin-2 (Peppermint-9-20190102) bug fixes:-
  • Fixed an issue where 64bit UEFI installs would fail to properly install the signed GRUB bootloader without an active internet connection.
  • Fixed missing Chinese / Japanese / Korean fonts in the installer.
  • Fixed the “OEM Install” option.

All other changes remain the same as those for the original Peppermint 9 Respin, which can be seen here:
http://peppermintos.com/2018/12/peppermint-9-respin-released/

Please also see the Release Notes which also remain the same for Peppermint 9 Respin-2

  3. gabriel tondeira

I liked it. I’m getting sick of Windows 10 problems. Will format the PC and install Peppermint. I already dual booted and liked it!

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks Gabriel, glad to hear you liked it enough to make it the main OS .. thanks for the feedback, it’s really appreciated :)

since version 6,, ,,not a linux expert but like to tinker and get my hand “dirty” more now and then … this is the most user friendly and ,, trouble free Ubuntu derivatives !! very similar to Lubuntu , obviously , but this seems to add more “bells and whistles” ( but NOT bloat !! ) that just makes all run smooth , and the options to just have a basic speedy desktop ,, use the online programs , and even to dig deeper into linux, , this is great !

    1. Mark Greaves

Cheers for the glowing feedback Thomas, we’re happy to see you’re a long term supporter and are enjoying your Peppermint experience .. thanks for taking the time to get in touch, feedback is very important to us and a great team motivator :)

  6. Dan Kern

I just downloaded the Peppermint9 Respin 2, but I cannot locate a corresponding GPG file to test it against in the list. Not sure if I need it or not, but was just trying to confirm that I got a good download. I’ll try to install with the downloaded file and if I have issues, I’ll look for the GPG file again to verify my download.

    1. Mark Greaves

      Hi Dan,
The GPG signature file was available when you clicked the big red download button on the front page. But you are right, we’d forgot to add then to the list on the GPG Verification instructions page .. thanks for bringing this to our attention, the page is now fixed :)

Does anyone know how to install Joplin Notes in Peppermint?
It was easy to install in my, “play Linux,( Fedora 29)” but I cannot figure out how to install it in Peppermint 9, which is my, “work,” Linux
    Thanks

    1. Mark Greaves

Can you please raise this question on our support forum:

Got tired of winblows 10 after many blue screens UGH!! My Distro now Peppermint 9 respin my System Pep 9 x86_64, kernel 4.15.0-43-generic, Intel i5-7400 (4) @ 3500GHZ, Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050, Memory 16 GiG, absolutely great Distro, thx Pep team

    1. Mark Greaves

You’re most welcome Freek Viljoen, glad you’re enjoying Peppermint :)

  9. Rodrigo

Which is the best? Peppermint 9 or 8? I remember when I’ve migrated from 8 to 9, but the performance got down in my machine.

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi Rodrigo, it would be impossible for us to answer that question with any certainty on hardware that we haven’t tested it on. I for example have laptops that are faster with 8, and others that seem faster with 9. We can say that ‘in general’ 8 might be very slightly lighter than 9 but there’s not much in it.

  10. Kevin

I have been using Linux for some years now, mainly Linux Mint Mate version 17.3. However support ends in April 2019 so I have been looking at upgrading my 3 computers to Mint Mate 18 or 19.1. But I had problems, 2 of my computers are old and with 18 and 19.1 they were getting slow. An internet search suggested 10 possible distros to try, Peppermint OS was the top one to try so I downloaded Peppermint 9 (20190102) 32 bit, made a USB install stick and tried a live installation. I liked it, I then dual installed with Mint 18 on one machine and Mint 19.1 on another. The installation did not work smoothly. Peppermint ran well but the Mint 18/19.1 would not run. So I went ahead and installed Peppermint as the sole OS, and set up the machines. Dropbox installed easily, so did Thunderbird. The machines start up quickly and seem stable. A very good pleasing experience. Will I convert my main desktop from Mint Mate 17.3? the only thing to check is will Peppermint be able to find and control my printer/ scanner, it took me ages to sort it out with Linux Mint.

    1. Mark Greaves

Let’s hope it can Kevin, thanks very much for the feedback :)

  11. Ruben

its been 2 years since i firstly downloaded peppermint os and i love it.GOD BLESS YOU

  12. ruBEN

    Also,please keep peppermint lightweight :)

    1. Mark Greaves

No problem ruBEN, we’ve no plans to become bloated my friend :)

  13. Kevin

    Dear Mark,
I tried Simple Scan on my Peppermint 9 32 bit installation and it worked straight away without any problem. I tried to download the 64 bit iso to put on my desktop but it said it would take hours. I have no experience on using torrent downloads, and a google search seems to indicate they are complicated and there are some dangers. Is there some other way I can get a copy of the 64 bit iso? at the moment I am installing the 32 bit version onto my 64 bit desktop, what benefits would there be in installing a 64 bit version rather than the 32 bit version? My initial impression of Peppermint… I like it.

    1. Mark Greaves

There is no danger in using the torrent if you get the torrent file from this website. If you’re already using Peppermint just download the torrent file and double click on it, Transmission should autoload and start downloading the ISO into your Downloads folder (by default).
      OR
I’ve sent you an email with another direct download link.

  14. Brodersen

    Hello

First of all a big thanks to the Peppermint Team. Great work. I have Peppermint as my daily driver os and i am veryvery happy with it. Customisation and softwareresources are great. When i downloaded the latest iso today 64 bit i tried to check md5sum and sha256. are the ones in the pop up window correct? then my download is corrupt…

    1. Mark Greaves

The checksums for Peppermint 9 Respin-2 (20190102) are as follows:-

      Peppermint-9-20190102-amd64.iso
      md5sum: 245bd2d7bb12e5adac7d09e71cca7f98
      sha256sum: de84c5beaf884ad89de6f1217f96db7c5b0e6e8a4502daa4d3510b72c062fcc1

      Peppermint-9-20190102-i386.iso
      md5sum: 776779bc22d78c46ed33fb811df2a414
      sha256sum: 4877766211798a40ee4393b172b90c141708457242ac39710aae11db7570fce8

I’ve just verified these against the iso files on our server (and linked form the red buttons on our front page) and the md5/sha256 hashes held by myself, and everything is correct. So I can only assume your download became corrupted somehow, or whatever you’re using to verify the checksums is giving an incorrect value.

If you’re still having problems, please bring this up on our support forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
mentioning what software you’re using to generate the checksums for verification.

      1. Doug Barber

Mark Greaves: Peppermint sure looks great! I have been following since v7. I love that it has Nemo. I have tried twice to verify iso. Twice “Bad signature”. I haven’t even got to downloading more software tp make a bootable USB. I help people, sometimes long distance to switch and install Linux. You know, single moms with kids who need a functioning computer or older moms & pops. Usually with older hardware having trouble with Win10. These people are NOT tech-wizards. If I can’t do it, they won’t be able either. I am forced to stick with ALL THINGS MINT (Cinnamon-Mate-XFCE) where I can get them to download and easily make a bootable USB and do simple upgrades. Maybe someday Peppermint will be an option! “Simplicity is evidence of a higher intelligence.” – Albert Einstein

        1. Mark Greaves

Hi Doug, I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble verifying the ISO, but I just downloaded both the ISO and the sig file (for the 64bit ISO) and I got:-

          mark@E6540 ~/Desktop/iso-test $ gpg --verify Peppermint-9-20190102-amd64.iso.sig Peppermint-9-20190102-amd64.iso
gpg: Signature made Tue 01 Jan 2019 17:18:40 GMT
          gpg: using RSA key E499FD0BAECF1D2F
gpg: Good signature from "Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) " [ultimate]

So there’s nothing wrong with the (64bit) ISO and signature file on this server .. I’ll test the 32bit version next though, just to be sure.

Where/how are you getting the ISO .. direct download from this website, or via torrent ?

If you’d like to email me, I can give you temporary direct download link to a copy of the ISO on my personal NAS you can try.
          mark@peppermintos.com

          [EDIT]

Also tested the 32bit ISO and that’s fine too

          mark@E6520 ~/Desktop/iso-test $ gpg --verify Peppermint-9-20190102-i386.iso.sig Peppermint-9-20190102-i386.iso
gpg: Signature made Tue 01 Jan 2019 17:19:13 GMT
          gpg: using RSA key E499FD0BAECF1D2F
gpg: Good signature from "Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) " [ultimate]

So the problem doesn’t appear to be at our end.

  15. Mahir

Brilliant OS. Great work by the team again! Is there a release date for peppermint 10?

  16. Basantdeep Singh Dhillon

    Man oh man…
    I really glad i came across peppermint….
I loved every bit of it…
Most under rated os of the world…

Keep the up work ….. Guys..
    Really well done…

    1. Mark Greaves

Well that was a glowing endorsement, thanks very much :)

  17. Ray Wells

I’ve been using debian based Linux for a number of years now and originally tried Peppermint as an experiment while looking for something lightweight for an old netbook. Not only did it run well, it was lighter than the others I tried, it was faster too…and looks awesome! Peppermint even had my favorite menu bar and let me install my favorite (xfce)weather plugin. I liked it enough to replace Xubuntu on my main systems and have been very pleased with the results.
    cheers!

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much for that ringing endorsement Ray, if we’re being rated up there with the awesome Xubuntu we must be doing something right :)

  18. Henry Rodriguez

Peppermint is an excellent alternative to Windows. Will continue to use as primary OS.

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks for the feedback Henry, glad you like it :)

    2. Mike snow

Where is the Respin 2??? Ah now I see it. I thought that’s what I downloaded, but I see no download link for it- doing Respin 1 will mess up the Grub and make whole computer unbootable!! Maybe just delete Respin 1. Also I don’t see any Windows or other partitions on Files in my computer under Media, though it is a junky USB. I do in GParted.

      1. Mark Greaves

Hi Mike, the latest version of Peppermint (currently Respin 2) is always available on the front page of this website:-
        http://peppermintos.com
Just click one of the big red buttons labelled “Download 32bit” or “Download 64bit”.

  19. Torsten

Great job, really! I love Peppermint so far.
The only problem I have is the strange look of the font(s) in Firefox. I don’t know what caused this? But so far, I really love Peppermint.
I only have one question: Will Peppermint OS remain with LXDE/Xfce or will you soon switch to LXQT? I hope, you won’t. LXQT is quite bad, in my view.

    Greetings from Germany,

    Torsten

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi Torsten thanks for the feedback, Not sure what you mean about the fonts without a screenshot, but if you’re having problems the forum is the best place to ask for help:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
      hope to see you there.
Also you’ll be glad to hear we have no plans to go LXQt ;)

  20. BattleScarze

I just downloaded the latest version of Peppermint 20190102 and the hash check does not match? I am a newb here and just want to install this OS for running a media server.

    1. Mark Greaves

Either your download is corrupt or whatever you’re using to generate the checksum is giving an incorrect value. Just to be sure I’ve just checked the ISO’s held on our server and the checksums are correct (and verified against those I hold locally).

      Peppermint-9-20190102-i386.iso (32bit)
      md5sum: 776779bc22d78c46ed33fb811df2a414

      Peppermint-9-20190102-amd64.iso (64bit)
      md5sum: 245bd2d7bb12e5adac7d09e71cca7f98
      sha256sum: de84c5beaf884ad89de6f1217f96db7c5b0e6e8a4502daa4d3510b72c062fcc1

  21. M. Faisal

Thank you so much for making best operating system, I love Peppermint OS, I install it all of my friends computers, and they love also, thank you once again….

    1. Mark Greaves

You’re most welcome M. Faisal, thanks very much for the enthusiastic feedback :)

  22. Kenneth R

ppmint is my main os from 6 month ago in my 3 pc …lenovo ideapad i3, dell optiplex and pentium4…. it’s the best and more beauty distro … tks a lot from Costa Rica

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much Kenneth R, Peppermint is certainly ‘feeling the love’ lately :)

  23. Emmanuel L

Please add the option for removing window control buttons (minimize, maximize and exit) as seen in linux mint i believe. Other than that request I have to say you guys are doing a great job. i like this os.
But then downloading the latest iso is not staight forward. (im not sure whether the iso im downloading is respin 1 or 2)

    1. Mark Greaves

I do believe this can be done in Peppermint too, your best bet would be to ask on the forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
where we’ll be happy to point you in the right direction

  24. Neil

i am new to lynx and i have tried so many going to try peppermint am i able to play windows games manly world of warcraft will this work

    1. Mark Greaves

You can’t install Windows games ‘natively’, but a lot of Windows games can be ‘made to work’ .. you’d be better served asking on our support forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
hope to see you there :)

  25. Fadli

    Hello Mark Greaves :) ,

So I’m looking lightweight OS for my low spec netbook (which default with windows 10 and every running browser like Opera or Firefox will restart) then, I try to Xubuntu well this lightweight too, but don’t know my RAM (1.87G) still got high, while on idle state got only free 754MB, now imagine if I open LibraOffice and Opera at the same time, yup my netbook freeze (based Htop). I would try PeppermintOS as I see on comment really nice and this on “REALLY” lightweight OS.. I’m student and from Indonesia, maybe you don’t understand some of I typed.. XD I’ll try it and download it now, thank so much for Peppermint team!

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks Fadli, We hope Peppermint works out for you :)

  26. Ranny Hammond

    I’m new to everything accept, Windows 7 @ 10, which I really don’t them.
Of all the other operating systems, I seem to like Peppermint the best. But, I’m not a computer expert by along shot! Will I have a huge learning curve when learning Peppermint 9 (2)?
I may need help with many things. I really want to get away from Microsoft.
How much of Peppermint 9 (2) does Microsoft control?

    1. Mark Greaves

Hi Ranny, Yes there will be a learning curve but depending on what it is you want to do with your system it may not be very steep, can I draw your attention to our support forum:
      https://forum.peppermintos.com
where there are a lot of committed people that will help you with that learning curve should you have any questions.

Microsoft has absolutely zero control over Peppermint, they do contribute to the upstream Linux kernel but they have no say any decisions we make.

  27. Mike Snow

As usual, blazing fast, and far better than current Ubuntu, which is shockingly blocky and childish. But I installed Ubuntu first, which seems notably slower than Windows or Peppermint. So on a Dual boot (Grub default) Win10- Ubuntu18.4 system on a Dell Inspiron 15 3567:

I want to install Peppermint9 as a 3rd system- will it figure out how to add itself to the Ubuntu GRUB, overwrite GRUB with it’s own and all 3 systems, destroy it so nothing boots, or how do I do that myself by maybe waylaying GRUB installation and editing it?

ONE MORE crucial thing- can I re-enable Windows Secure Boot without damaging either system.. figure can always get into BIOS with F2 to shut it off. Will it work OK- I have Intel 640 shared Graphics? Maybe AFTER Pep9 installation? Was kind of shocked Win10 didn’t throw a fit when it saw 16 partitions I half made in Ubuntu. But I am in very heavy threat environment + Windows needs all the help it can get.

    1. mike snow

Ubuntu found the first aborted Pep installation (bad disk) on an update and added it, but Peppermint overwrote it with it’s own more primitive bootloader, which found all OS’s OK. To change the default boot partitions, I just change the sda# in 5 places on GRUB, right?

  28. Brian

I’ve been using Linux since early 90’s when I needed to bring an ancient Imac back from paperweight state to host a website. I’ve been through countless distros and flavors— and of them all my favorite is Peppermint. Started using it with version 5 and have stuck with it and spread the word about it every chance I get. Great concept and execution. Thank you team!

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much for the feedback Brian, great to hear Peppermint is doing the job for you :)

  29. StrawberryPrincess

I use this one on my super old notebook; works well better than lubunt! :D

    1. Mark Greaves

Thanks very much for the vote of confidence StrawberryPrincess, happy to have you on board.

Strawberry and Peppermint obviously work well together :)

  30. Alexander Granåsen

I use PeppermintOS on an 11 year old HP6530B with dual-core, 4 gb of ram and SSD hdd . It does certain tasks faster then on my HP Elitebook 840G2 with 16 gb ram that has Windows 10 on it. I really love how snappy the system feels all the time and it never lags, this is why i love using PeppermintOS, it’s also very neat and user-friendly.

Keep up the good work Mark and everyone else on the PeppermintOS team, i recommend this system to everyone, both for newer computers and old :).

    1. Mark Greaves

Many thanks for the feedback Alexander, great to hear Peppermint is doing the business for you and thanks for recommending us, much appreciated :)

  31. jon

    gracias excelente so

    1. Mark Greaves

      Eres bienvenido :)

  32. JIMMY CASALDI

I smashed two lap tops into little pieces.Im not proud of it but one had a malfunctioning windows 10 the other an outdated windows that Microsoft refused help with. I bought an HP 2000 notebook with another useless windows 8. when the hammer went over my head my friend showed up with a USB Stick with peppermint 9. It works wonderful with my AMD Processor and my Mozilla Firefox browser. I completely changed my computer experience into somethjing fun and not exasperating. Thank You so much to your team. I will be trying your other products as well. Heros OF THE COMPUTER WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Mark Greaves

LOL :)) .. glad (for your computers sake) that you found us Jimmy, step away from the hammer .. thanks for the feedback, gave me my first laugh of the day :)

  33. Chuck

Please forgive my brain damage but I can’t find a link to download 9 respin. Where is it?

    Thanks
